Fascinating Facts

Steering a racing car around a track requires a different driving style. This is particularly true when cornering because it is here that valuable lap time can be lost. On approaching a corner a driver must select the correct racing line, in effect, the corner must be 'straightened out' so the car slows for the least amount of time. At a given point the driver selects a braking point (these are often marked by cones) then brakes with a calm progressive movement. Whilst braking, a lower gear is selected and, when the correct turning-in speed is achieved, pressure is relaxed on the brakes. Turn the wheel smoothly, remembering to keep the hands firmly at the 'ten to two' position and apply steady pressure to the accelerator because stabbing movements can unbalance the car and cause the back end to slide away. Upon reaching the apex of the corner (again usually marked by a cone) more pressure can be applied to the accelerator. How much depends on the condition of the track and the type of corner being negotiated. Finally, on exiting the corner, the driver can accelerate away. And these cars can go - these single seaters have an open cockpit and range from Formula Ford to Formula Renault to Formula First depending on the circuit.
