Fascinating Facts

Enzo Ferrari, born in Modena Italy in 1898, began his legendary racing career in the 1920s when he drove for and then managed the Alfa Romeo racing team. During this time he met Countess Paolina Baracca, who let him use the 'Cavallino', the black prancing horse logo previously displayed as a good luck charm on her flying ace son's plane. However it was 1946 before the first car bearing his name, the 125S, appeared and this achieved its first victory in May 1947. Then in 1948 the first road car was produced - the 166 Sport, and other more powerful examples followed. As was the custom, the bodies were built by different Italian designers, including Touring, Vignale, Ghia and Farina. Ferrari's first V12 was introduced in 1950 and the tradition of road cars powered by V12s mounted at the front continued until the 1960s when the first mid-engine road car appeared called the Dino, after his late son, to avoid marketing a V6 car as a Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari died in 1988, sadly some years before his racing team came back in such style winning several world championships, but his reputation will live on as the driving force behind some of the most desirable cars on earth.
