Fascinating Facts

The first flotation tank was developed in 1950 by Professor Dr John C Lilly while working at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. He became intrigued by whether the brain needed external stimuli to keep its conscious state going. He set out to devise a system that would restrict environmental stimulation as much as was practical and feasible. Lilly's first tank was one in which the floater was suspended upright. Over the years, Lilly continued his experiments and found that he could float in a more relaxing supine position if more buoyant salt were used. By the early 1970s, Lilly had perfected the flotation tank in much the design used today. The average tank contains a solution of water and 700lbs of medical grade Epsom salt. This solution is so dense that it allows you to float on top of the water effortlessly, just like a cork, and without gravity impacting your body. The water is set to your skin's temperature (about 94F) so that you cannot distinguish between yourself and the water. Fans believe it promotes total calm, eliminates fatigue, alleviates stress and promotes creativity. These have included Aldous Huxley, John Lennon, Robin Williams, Michael Jackson and Susan Sarandon.

Do you want to know what is floatation good for and furthermore did you know that people were used to wear complicated head-masks in order to breathe underwater earlier?
